How to Build A Cult

In Case you’re wondering whether this is still a marketing newsletter

Or some weird guide to starting your own religion.

It is still a marketing newsletter.

Where do cults fit in?

That’s quite simple.

All of the most influential brands have cult-like followings.

Think of Nike, Apple, Linux, Elon Musk (yes he’s a brand) and even Taylor Swift.

The one thing they all have in common is that they have cults.

Or at least a cult like following.

And creating such a following starts with

  1. Finding Your Psychographic. (Or your people)

While most businesses go for niches etc (not saying that’s wrong) brands go for psychographics.

A psychographic is you targeting a group of people with beliefs or common thoughts.

Demography is the opposite. You target people based on age, ethnicity etc.

That’s ok but at the end of the day what you’re looking for from that demographic is a pattern of thought, behavior or some familiarity.

Elon Musk – goes for people who are already tech savvy and love future tech

Nike – goes for people who are into fitness & innovation.

Apple – goes for people who want to get an overpriced phone. (I’m kidding but if you’re pissed that’s proof you need a therapist)

Andrew Tate – goes for guys that feel terrible & are looking for guidance.

Once you find your people.

Their thoughts, wants & beliefs that’s when you’re on a way to creating a cult community

  1. Have A Great Story

Businesses have good stories (or none at all).

Brands have great stories.

First thing is first.

DON’T MAKE UP STORIES.

In the end those always fail.

What you want to do is to tell a genuine true story that inspires.

A good story has

  1.  A character with a dream
  2. A hurdle
  3. A journey to the desired dream.
  4. The result

This isn’t what every brand has but it’s vital.

Elon Musk’s story (though controversial) is simple. He’s an immigrant that ended up in the U.S. with a dream to change the world’s financial system. Build rockets and do other crazy stuff.

Taylor Swift is the girl that felt that no one really wanted her but eventually got over that feeling to create music.

Apple has the story of Steve Jobs the innovator that built it from scratch, got kicked out from it and then helped it grow.

The common thing in all of these stories is at one point they were all the underdog.

They all had their struggles and in some ways they’re still continuing to live out their dream.

Looks like we’ve run out of pages. Part two will come out tomorrow.
